Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP)

Mechanical ventilation is the main risk factor for development of hospital-related bacterial pneumonia. Up to 15 percent of all HAIs, along with an estimated 27 percent of all infections acquired in the ICU, are attributed to ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), the leading cause of death among hospital-acquired infections. The hospital mortality rate for ventilated patients who develop VAP is 46%, compared with 32% for those who do not.1
